Is Counselling for you?

Well, I’ll be honest – I’m biased!

Within months of starting my training to become a Counsellor, I clearly remember thinking: “Wow, everyone should study this!”, and then I continued to learn more about what Counselling really is and what it can do for us and our lives – well, needless to say, I’m a total advocate for it!

Historically, there has been such stigma surrounding “Counselling”, “Therapy” and “Mental Health”. It’s a step forward that so many people are now speaking out and sharing their experiences – I feel that it goes a long way towards “normalising” it. However, regardless of the subjects themselves becoming more accepted and commonplace, it can still feel like a difficult decision for an individual who is facing challenges, to reach out for counselling themselves.

There can be many reasons for this; it can feel difficult to “give in” and accept that the situation has reached a point where we need help to find the wood for the trees. Or it could be that we have spent so long denying that there even is a problem, that we can no longer see it or the effect that it is having on our lives. Sometimes we use up so much mental and emotional energy trying to suppress thoughts of our difficulties that it can feel like letting them out and giving them all free rein is akin to opening Pandora’s Box.

BUT…. The reality is that by trying to avoid them, they can turn in to a festering wound, which harms us so much more.

It robs us: of peace, of happiness, of the ability to be our best selves and of opportunities for a better life.

You have the power to choose better for yourself.
